WELLESLEY, Mass. -- After a ten-month long renovation, Wellesley College’s Dorothy Towne Fieldhouse and new fitness center officially opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony and community open house on Friday, February 13th.

Bridget Belgiovine, Wellesley College Director of Athletics and Chair of the Department of Physical Education, Recreation and Athletics was joined by Andy Shennan, Provost and Dean of the College, Dean of Students Debra Demeis as well as Charlotte Harris '16, Wellesley College Government Vice President and a member of the Swimming & Diving Team, Chief Justice Katherine Tran '15, Martha Dietrick, PERA Associate Director and Becky Kimball, Alice and John Butler Director of Sports Performance & Fitness for the ribbon cutting ceremony in the new fitness center.

A testament to the college’s support of fitness, recreation and athletics, the renewal project began in March of 2014 and resulted in a new 4,600 square foot climate controlled fitness center centralizing strength training and cardio in one very bright, energetic space. The fitness center overlooks a multi-use fieldhouse that contains a climate controlled spinning room, a beautiful wood basketball/volleyball court, four-lane track, jumping pit, three tennis courts, a rock climbing wall and hitting cages for softball and golf as well as over 55 new pieces of cardio and strength equipment and a variety of other fitness related equipment including kettlebells and dumbells, exercise balls, bands and ropes.

The Open House included a spin-a-thon alongside ‘wellness stations’ for all guests to explore. The stations included representatives from: Wellesley Fresh, Wellesley Recreation, Student Involvement, Human Resources/Healthy You, Health Services, and Counseling Services.
