#4 Bowdoin Escapes with 1-0 Win Over Wellesley Field Hockey

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Bowdoin's Katie Riley scored with 15 second remaining in the game as the #4 Bowdoin College field hockey team escaped with a 1-0 win over Wellesley on Sunday afternoon. The win lifts the Polar Bears to 2-0, while the Blue suffer their first loss of the season, moving to 3-1.

Riley scored after a hit in from the left side threaded its way in front of the Blue's goal. With time ticking off the clock, a mad scramble developed in front of the keeper, until Meaghan Dwan tapped a ball that Riley redirected into the back of the cage.

The game was close throughout, as the midfield battle was not clearly won. Bowdoin started the game strong, recording the first four shots and two corners, before the Blue took over. Wellesley has two great attempts in goal in the 23rd minute of play, with shots from Hannah Flesch and Nikki Sharkin just missing the cage after a corner.

Late in the first half, Bowdoin's Adrienne O'Donnell and Kelsey Mullaney each recorded shots after corners, but Wellesley keeper Brit Mscisz picked up both saves, keeping the game scoreless. In the final minute of the first half, Wellesley's Meghan Peterson ripped a shot from the top of the circle, but it went just wide, sending the game into the break at 0-0.

The second half was much of the same, with both teams having several good chances to score. Bowdoin's best chance before their goal came in the 60th minute, when a Colleen Finnerty attempt was turned aside by Mscisz. Wellesley also had a 67th-minute penalty corner, but couldn't get off a shot, setting up Bowdoin's 70th-minute heartbreaker.

The visitors ended the game with a 15-6 advantage in shots, while holding a 10-5 edge in corners. Bowdoin's Hannah Gartner needed two saves to earn the win, while Wellesley's Mscisz turned away seven shots, suffering the loss.

Wellesley returns to action on Wednesday, traveling to Wesleyan for a 7:00pm match-up. Bowdoin next plays on Saturday, heading to Amherst for a 12:00pm NESCAC battle.
