NORTON, Mass. – The 12th-ranked Wellesley College field hockey team opened conference play in dominating fashion, defeating Wheaton College, 7-0, on the road on Saturday. The game kicked off the 2014 NEWMAC season for both squads. 

Today's victory runs Wellesley's winning streak to seven games, as the Blue are now 7-0, 1-0 in NEWMAC Play. Wheaton dips to 5-2 overall, 0-1 in the conference.

Wellesley received a pair of goals from junior Hannah Flesch and senior Alex Azzi, while Courtney Peterson, Nathalie Gruet and Nikki Sharkin added solo tallies in the victory. Five of the visitors' seven goals came off assists as Anissa Sridhar, Caroline Guild, Meghan Peterson, Mary Lemay and Gruet all dished out helpers for the Blue.

Wheaton senior goalkeeper Madison Wolters stopped a game-high seven saves in the loss (5-2). Wolters entered play today ranked No. 49 overall among all NCAA Division III goalkeepers in saves per game at 7.83. Wellesley goalkeepers Lucy Hurlock and Becky Hamilton each played a half in the contest but were not tested with any shots on goal. Hurlock, who got the start in the game, improved to 7-0 on the season.

Wellesley jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first half as Sharkin potted her fifth goal of the season on a pass from Sridhar at the 7:07 mark to take an early 1-0 advantage. Courtney Peterson followed with her seventh marker of the season at 17:26 and Flesch also notched an unassisted tally at 23:38 to make it 3-0. Gruet capped the scoring in the first half with her tenth goal of the year at the 29:04 mark via a feed from Meghan Peterson.

Flesch contributed her team-leading 14th goal of the season at 46:10, while Azzi scored in the 61st and 66th minutes of the contest. The Blue outshot the hosts 40-3 and compiled a 19-1 differential in corners.

Wheaton hosts Simmons for a non-conference matchup onTuesday, September 23 at 7 p.m. Wellesley welcomes Connecticut College to its campus next Wednesday for a non-conference game at 4:30 p.m.
