Two Second-Half Goals Propel #9 Wellesley Past WPI

Worcester, MA --- Ninth ranked Wellesley scored a pair of second half goals to defeat host WPI, 2-1, in a NEWMAC field hockey matchup.  The win came in front of an energetic crowd on Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium in Worcester as part of WPI's Homecoming Weekend.

The Blue improve to 12-1 overall and 5-0 in NEWMAC action while the Engineers slip to 8-4 and 2-3 in league play.

WPI scored first as Caroline Mazzola put the Engineers in front with 13:18 left in the opening half on what turned out to be WPI's only shot of the evening.  WPI goalie Lauren Puishys then stopped three shots and WPI survived a trio of penalty corners just before the break.

Puishys was solid in net all game, as she finished with eight saves.  Wellesley goalkeeper Lucy Hurlock went untested with the exception of the lone Engineer goal.

The Blue called a timeout at 49:07 and promptly scored 15 seconds after play resumed as Nikki Sharkin dribbled past a pair of defenders and lifted the ball over the goalie's left shoulder. Just over four minutes later, Hannah Flesch finished off a pass from Anissa Sridhar to give Wellesley the 2-1 lead.

The Blue are set for another tough matchup as they visit #7 Tufts on Wednesday, while WPI is off until next Saturday when the Engineers face Anna Maria.
