#8 Wellesley FH Celebrates Senior Day with 5-0 Victory Over Springfield

WELLESLEY, Mass. – Courtney and Meghan Peterson both scored a pair of goals and Nikki Sharkin added a pair of assists to power #8 Wellesley College Field Hockey to a 5-0 victory over visiting Springfield College on Saturday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex. Wellesley improves to 13-2 and a perfect 7-0 in the NEWMAC. Springfield is now 5-8 (1-5 NEWMAC) on the season.

The game took place as part of Homecoming Weekend at Wellesley and also served as Senior Day for the Blue's Alex Azzi, Nathalie Gruet, Becky Hamilton, Lallie Lukens, Dana Marks and Meghan Peterson.

Junior Hannah Flesch scored her team-leading 17th goal of the season, and the eventual game-winner, just 2:24 into the contest, finishing on Sharkin's first helper of the afternoon following Wellesley's second penalty corner opportunity in the first two minutes.

The Blue held a substantial 12-3 advantage in penalty corners while outshooting the Pride 19-6 in the contest.

Wellesley added its second goal of the day just before half as Sharkin found Meghan Peterson for her first goal of the season at 32:01 of the first. Meghan Peterson would add her second goal at 52:44 of the second half, but not before Courtney Peterson scored a pair of her own.

With the Blue lead 2-0 to open the second half, Courtney Peterson scored a pair of goals 1:29 seconds apart to give the Blue a commanding 4-0 lead.  Courtney Peterson finished on assists from a pair of seniors, scoring her ninth goal of the season on a feed from Lukens at 42:53 before finding the back of the cage on an assist from Gruet at 44:22.

Sophomore Lucy Hurlock made one save in the Wellesley cage, earning the victory. Hamilton came on in relief and made a pair of stops in the final fifteen minutes of the play. Springfield's Timarie Villa played the full 70 minutes, making 10 saves on 15 shots on goal.

Both teams will continue NEWMAC play on Tuesday evening. Wellesley will travel to nearby MIT for 6:00 PM start, while Springfield will host Clark at 7:00 PM.
