Blue Field Hockey's Julia King Named NFHCA Regional Coach of the Year
WELLESLEY, Mass. — Wellesley Field Hockey head coach Julia King has been selected as the 2014 4U Field Hockey / National Field Hockey Coaches Association (NFHCA) New England East Region Coach of the Year. This is the second consecutive NFHCA Regional Coach of the Year honor for King, who also earned the award in 2013.
Guided by King, and assistant coaches Callie Lekas '10 and Emily Mercer, the Blue went 19-3 overall in 2014, breaking the program record for wins in a season set just last year. Wellesley went undefeated in New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play, going a perfect 8-0 in the regular season before capturing the tournament championship and advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the second straight year.
Under King's guidance, five Wellesley field hockey student-athletes earned post-season awards this season, led by first team All-American Nathalie Gruet. Gruet, who also earned the NEWMAC and NFHCA Regional Player of the Year awards, was joined on the All-America team by second-team selection senior Meghan Peterson and third-team honoree junior Anissa Sridhar. Gruet, Peterson and Sridhar were also joined on the NFHCA All-Region and NEWMAC All-Conference teams by senior Lallie Lukens and junior Hannah Flesch.
The 2013 and 2014 NEWMAC Coach of the Year, King has compiled an overall record of 59-24 in four season at Wellesley.
