No. 13 Babson Upends No. 9 Wellesley Field Hockey, 3-0

BABSON PARK, Mass. – No. 13 Babson College got three goals from three different players to upset No. 9 Wellesley College field hockey, 3-0, in a matchup of nationally ranked New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) teams on Tuesday evening at MacDowell Field.

Babson remains undefeated at 12-0 on the season, improving to 4-0 in NEWMAC play while snapping Wellesley's 19-game conference win streak and dropping the Blue to 9-2 (3-1 NEWMAC) on the year.

The Beavers scored the only goal of the first half when first year Lauren Drakeley (Woodbury, Conn.) netted her second career goal with an unassisted strike in the 19th minute.

In the second half, Babson took advantage of two of their three penalty corner opportunities to run their advantage to 3-0. Senior Elizabeth Holmes (Southborough, Mass.) recorded an assist on each goal, first setting up first year Catherine Gilman (Cohasset, Mass.) for her sixth goal of the season in the 43rd minute, before helping junior Nicole Smith (Barrington, R.I.) score her first of the season at 59:24.

Wellesley held an 8-7 advantage in penalty corners in the contest, including a 6-3 edge after the break, but was unable to solve Babson senior goalkeeper Kayla Costa (Watertown, Mass.), as the nation's leader in goals against average made four saves to record the shutout.

Babson outshot the Blue by 12-6 margin, including a 10-4 advantage in shots on goal, as Wellesley junior goalkeeper Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) turned away seven Babson shots on the evening.

Wellesley will look to bounce back on Saturday, October 10, at 12:00 PM when they host NEWMAC foe WPI in the annual Play4theCure Game in support of the National Foundation for Cancer Research. Babson will also play on Saturday at 12:00 PM, when they host Smith.
