BRUNSWICK, Maine – No. 2 Bowdoin College scored two goals in each half to down No. 16 Wellesley College field hockey, 4-0, in non-conference play on Wednesday evening at Ryan Field.

Wellesley is now 5-3 overall, while Bowdoin moves to 6-1 on the year.

Senior Kimmy Ganong (Brunswick, Maine) scored twice and sophomore Elizabeth Bennewitz (Westport, Conn.) recorded three assists to lead the Polar Bear attack. Ganong scored both Bowdoin goals in the first half, opening the scoring at 16:23 when she finished on an assist from junior Juliana Fiore (Westwood, Mass.).

Bennewitz set-up the next three Bowdoin goals, first finding Ganong to increase the Bowdoin lead to 2-0 before halftime. Bennewitz ripped a drive from the top of the arc that Ganong redirected past Blue goalkeeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) and in with just under three minutes to go until the break.

The Polar Bears added two more after halftime, first taking a 3-0 lead 12:49 into the second half when senior Mettler Growney (New Canaan, Conn.) slammed home a feed from Bennewitz on a Bowdoin corner. Bowdoin then made it 4-0 with another penalty corner goal at 65:36, as first year Kara Finnerty (Hopkinton, Mass.) redirected a Bennewitz shot into the Wellesley cage.

Bowdoin finished the contest with a 14-1 edge in corners and 21-1 shot advantage over the Blue. Connelly and senior Lucy Hurlock (Needham, Mass.) combined to make 10 saves for the Blue. For Bowdoin, seniors Clara Belitz (Del Mar, Calif.) and Liz Rill (St. Louis, Mo.) combined for the shutout.
