Wellesley Field Hockey Earns 3-2 Victory On The Road At Bridgewater St.

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. – Junior forward Haley Chrobock (Branchville, N.J.) tallied a goal and an assist to lead the visiting Wellesley College field hockey team to a 3-2 victory over Bridgewater State University in non-conference action on Tuesday night at Swenson Field.

The Blue improve to 3-1 on the season with the win, The host Bears fall to 2-1 as they suffered their first setback of the 2017 campaign.

The Blue opened the scoring in the 21st minute as Chrobock corralled a loose ball in front of the BSU net and slipped a pass back to sophomore forward Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.). Maisano beat the BSU netminder with a shot from seven yards out for her first goal of the season.

The Bears tied it up as they converted off a penalty corner in the 28th minute. Junior midfielder Julianne Kilduff (Bellingham, Mass.) fired a shot from just inside the circle that got past the Wellesley keeper. Junior midfielder Samantha Hayes (Norwood, Mass.) jumped on the loose ball near the goal line and knocked it into the unguarded net. The goal marked Hayes' team-leading fourth of the year.

Less than two minutes later, the Blue regained the lead as Chrobock redirected a shot from junior midfielder Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) off a penalty corner. Wellesley would take the 2-1 lead into the break.

The Bears tied the score up at 2-all in the 47th minute when junior forward Alexandra Zoebisch (Plymouth, Mass.) ripped home a shot from ten yards out that beat the Wellesley goaltender to the stick side. Senior forward Tori O'Dea (South Dennis, Mass.) set up the goal with a short pass to the middle. O'Dea leads the squad with four assists in three games.

Just over three minutes later, the Blue responded once again as junior midfielder Arielle Mitropoulos (Cambridge, Mass.) scored off the rebound of her own shot. The goal would prove to be the game-winner as Wellesley held on for the 3-2 victory.

The Blue held a 23-15 shot advantage for the game while penalty corners were even at five apiece.

Wellesley junior keeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) turned aside eight shots to record her third win of the season. BSU junior netminder Allison Chappell (Raynham, Mass.) was busy between the pipes for the Bears as she made a season-high 11 saves in the setback.

Both teams are back in action on Saturday afternoon. The Bears entertain Little East Conference (LEC) foe Westfield State University at four, while the Blue open New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play at home against WPI at noon.
