Blue Field Hockey Falls To Visiting Smith, 2-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Smith College senior Cameo Tietje (Massapequa, N.Y.) made eight save and the visiting Pioneers scored a goal in each half to earn a 2-0 shutout victory over Wellesley College field hockey in a New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) contest on Saturday at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

The Pioneers improved to 3-4 on the year, moving to 2-0 in NEWMAC play with the win. Wellesley is now 4-3 overall (1-1 NEWMAC).

Tietje turned back five shots in the first half, as the Pioneers took a 1-0 lead before the break on a goal from Julia Hamilton (Williamstown, Mass.). Hamilton scored her first of the season at 7:11, finishing on the post on an assist from senior Caroline Labriola (Westbrook, Conn.). Despite trailing at the break, Wellesley finished the first with a 9-5 edge in shots.

Smith doubled their advantage at 54:59 of the second, when Jenna Tampon (Oceanside, Calif.) cracked a shot inside the circle past Wellesley goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) to make the score 2-0. The Pioneers held on to the lead for the remainder of the contest, with Tietje adding four second half saves to finish the contest with eight. The Smith senior improved to 3-4 with the win, earning her third shutout in seven games. Sullivan (1-2) made seven saves in the Blue cage, including five in the second half.

The Blue ended the contest with an 18-13 edge in total shots and an 11-8 advantage in penalty corner opportunities. Smith had the edge in shots on goal, 9-8. Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.) and Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) each tallied a team-high four shots for the Blue. 

Wellesley will host No. 10 Bowdoin College in a non-conference tilt on Wednesday, September 27, at 4:00 PM. Smith will host Simmons in non-conference play on Tuesday, September 26, at 6:00 PM.
