BANGOR, Maine -- Sophomore Sarah Timmons (Madison, N.J.) scored a pair of goals and classmate Danielle Brubaker (Princeton Junction, N.J.) added a goal in the second half to lead Wellesley College field hockey to a 3-1 victory over Husson University on Friday evening at the Dr. John W. Winkin Sports Complex.

Timmons opened the scoring for the Blue, scoring Wellesley's first goal of 2018 and her first collegiate goal at 18:18 of the first half on an assist from senior Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.). The Blue (1-0) carried the 1-0 lead over the Eagles (0-1) into the half.

Brubaker gave the Blue a 2-0 advantage in the second half, scoring her first collegiate goal when she beat Eagles sophomore goalkeeper Andrea Shaggy (Harwinton, Conn.) with an unassisted effort at 46:31.

Wellesley held the 2-0 edge until Husson broke through with just 2:41 left on the clock, when sophomore Mercedes Pease (Sabattus, Maine) cut the deficit to 2-1 with help from sophomore Karen Stemm (Gorham, Maine). However, Timmons responded just under two minutes later, stuffing home a rebound to put the game away for the Blue.

Wellesley outshot the hosts, 15-8, and finished with a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. Husson's late surge helped the Eagles finish with a 5-4 advantage in shots on goal, as Wellesley goalkeeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) made four saves to help preserve the Blue victory. In the Husson cage, sophomore Andrea Shaggy (Harwinton, Conn.) turned back four shots.

Wellesley returns to action on Sunday at 11:00 AM when they travel to Saint Joseph's of Maine in non-conference play. Husson will travel to Colby College on Wednesday for a 7:00 PM start.
