Wellesley Field Hockey Falls at St. Joe's of Maine

STANDISH, Maine -- Wellesley College field hockey dropped a 7-0 non-conference game on Sunday afternoon against St. Joseph's College of Maine at the St. Joseph's Athletics Complex. Wellesley falls to 1-1 on the season, while St. Joe's is now 2-0.

St. Joe's senior Samantha Silva (Laconia, N.H.) paced the Monks with two goals in the contest. Sophomore Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine), junior Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine), first year Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine), Arianna Kahler (Lisbon Falls, Maine) and first year Meghan Hill (Brookline, N.H.) all tallied one goal each for the Monks.

The Monks held a 3-0 lead heading into the halftime break. St. Joe's extended their scoring in the second half with four more goals to earn the 7-0 victory over the Blue. St. Joe's outshot Wellesley, 19-6, and held the advantage in penalty corners, 11-5.

Senior Cecie Negron (Midlothian, Va.) led the Blue with four shots, registering one on goal. Classmate Arielle Mitropoulos (Cambridge, Mass.) tallied one shot, while junior Kerry Wells (Portland, Maine) came up with a defensive save at 10:17 in the first half.

Wellesley senior goalkeeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) recorded five saves in her 59:54 minutes of play and sophomore Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) made two saves in her 10:06 minutes. St. Joes senior goalkeeper Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) backstopped the Monks with three saves to earn her 21st career shutout.

Both teams return to action next Saturday, September 8 at 12:00 PM. Wellesley will host the University of Maine-Farmington and St. Joe's will travel to Anna Maria College.
