Blue Field Hockey Drops 6-1 Final to the University of New England

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College field hockey dropped a 6-1 non-conference game against the University of New England on Sunday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex. Wellesley is now 3-3 overall, while UNE improves to 2-4 on the season.

UNE scored three goals in each half to secure the 6-1 victory over the Blue. Junior Sydney Liptak (Westfield, Mass.) led the Nor'easters with two goals and an assist in the victory. Senior Brooke Lemerise (Bartlett, N.H.) also scored two goals, while classmate Kersey Boulay (Liberty, Maine) and junior Kendra MacDonald (Lebanon, N.H) both chipped in with a goal each.

MacDonald put the Nor'easters on the board first at 9:29, scoring off of her own rebound. Lemerise extended UNE's lead just two minutes later, as she carried the ball just inside the arc and unleashed a shot to notch her first goal of the season. Liptak scored at 22:05 when she found the ball after a scramble in front of the cage to give UNE the 3-0 advantage heading into halftime.

Lemerise scored 31 seconds into the second half, giving UNE a quick 4-0 lead. Three minutes later, MacDonald found Liptak to score her second goal of the game.

First year Caitlin Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) tallied her first assist for the Blue as she sent the ball from the top of the arc, down to senior Haley Chrobock (Branchville, N.J.) who redirected the pass to give Wellesley their lone goal of the game in the 49th minute. However, Boulay scored the final goal of the game in the 67th minute, firing a shot after receiving a pass from Liptak on the penalty corner to make the score at 6-1.

UNE held the advantage in shots, 19-9, but both teams had equal opportunities in penalty corners, 5-5. Wellesley goalkeepers Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) and Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) split time in the cage, with Connelly making three saves and Sullivan recording five. Sophomore goalkeeper Liz Sargent (South Burlington, Vt.) made four saves in the victory for UNE and is now 2-4 on the season.

Wellesley will return to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, September 22 when they travel to Smith for a 12:00 PM start. UNE will travel to Roger Williams on Tuesday, September 18 at 4:00 PM.
