Tufts Rolls To Non-Conference Victory Over Wellesley Field Hockey

MEDFORD, Mass. -- Senior Gigi Tutoni (Newtown, Pa.), junior Rachel Hamilton (Newton, Mass.), and first year Gillian Roeca (Baltimore, Md.) each scored a pair of goals as Tufts University stormed past Wellesley College field hockey, 8-0, in non-conference play on Wednesday at Ounjian Field. 

The Jumbos, ranked No. 3 in the latest NFHCA Division III National Poll, improved to 9-1 overall. Wellesley is now 4-8 on the season.

Roeca added two assists to lead Tufts, who also got goals from juniors Julia Todesco (Mansfield, Mass.) and Brigid Gliwa (Broomall, Pa.). Hamilton recorded an assist on Roeca's first goal, while Claire Foley (Louisville, Ky.), Marguerite Salamone (Yardley, Pa.), and Shannon Yogerst (San Diego, Calif.) also had helpers. 

The Jumbos owned a 5-0 lead at halftime and finished the contest with a 47-0 lead in shots. Wellesley goalkeepers Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) and Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) combined for 19 saves in the game, with Connelly finishing with a game-high 14. Sullivan took the loss, dropping to 1-2 overall. Tufts first year goalkeeper Andie Stallman (Providence, R.I.) earned her first career win.

Tutoni and Roeca scored just over two minutes apart to give Tufts a 2-0 lead by the 8:30 mark of the first. Tutoni added another at 20:04 before Hamilton scored the final two goals of the half to make the score 5-0 at halftime. Roeca added her second 3:33 into the second half. She then set-up Gliwa at 62:41 to make the score 7-0. Todesco closed out the scoring at 67:46 to give the Jumbos the 8-0 win.
