Hwang, Maisano Each Score To Send Wellesley Field Hockey Past MIT, 2-1

WELLESLEY, Mass.-- Senior Rachel Hwang (Campbell, Calif.) scored the game-winning goal for Wellesley College field hockey in a 2-1 New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) victory against MIT on Tuesday afternoon at the Wellesley Fields Complex.

Wellesley improves to 5-9 on the season and 2-5 in NEWMAC play. MIT drops to 8-6 overall and 3-3 in conference action.

Hwang scored her fourth career game-winner at 44:58 as first year Caitlin Campbell (San Diego, Calif.) sent a long ball towards the senoir forward who tipped it in past MIT sophomore goalkeeper Grace Moore (Boston, Mass.).

Junior Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) put Wellesley on the board in the first half when she brought the ball just inside the arc and sniped the point blank shot to take a 1-0 lead at 28:24. MIT answered in the second half at 42:50 when senior Bailey Tregoning (Frederick, Md.) scored her sixth of the season when she fired away the rebound of sophomore Amanda Garofalo (Fairfield, N.J.). Wellesley countered two minutes later when Hwang scored the game-winner to secure the 2-1 final.

Wellesley senior goalkeeper Maggie Connelly (Duxbury, Mass.) made eight saves in the victory and improves to 4-9 on the season. Connelly had help from sophomore Sarah Timmons (Madison, N.J.) at 61:53 when she came up with a huge defensive save off a shot from MIT first year Delia Stephens (Austin, Texas). Moore drops to 8-6 in the setback in her 70 minutes of play. Despite the setback, MIT held the advantage in shots, 12-8 and penalty corners, 7-3.

Both teams return action on Saturday, October 20. Wellesley will travel out of conference to play at Trinity with a 12:00 PM start. MIT will travel to Clark at 2:00 PM.
