Wellesley Field Hockey Falls to No. 7 Bowdoin, 5-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Bowdoin College senior Emma Stevens (Darien, Conn.) tallied two goals and two assists to lead the visiting Polar Bears to a 5-0 non-conference victory over Wellesley College field hockey on Tuesday evening at Butler Stadium.

Bowdoin, ranked No. 7 in the latest Penn Monto/NFHCA Division III National Coaches Poll, improves to 6-1 overall and 5-0 on the road with the victory. Wellesley is now 4-4 on the season.

Sophomore Manveer Sandhu (Mount Kisco, N.Y.) scored the game's first goal on Bowdoin's second penalty corner chance, driving a hard shot from the top into the cage following the insertion by senior Elle Brine (Hanover, N.H.) 8:10 into the first. The Polar Bears would add two more before the half to take a three-goal lead.

Stevens scored the second Bowdoin goal at 17:28, firing the ball into the cage after Elizabeth Growney (New Canaan, Conn.) corralled a Kara Finnerty (Hopkinton, Mass.) rebound and whipped the ball across to Stevens. Stevens returned the favor with 9:34 left before the half, setting-up Growney with a quick shot in front of the goal to make the score 3-0.

Finnerty and Stevens helped the Polar Bears secure the 5-0 final with a pair of third period goals. Stevens scored her second of the game and sixth of the season when she pushed home a rebound at 37:22. Finnerty then deflected a shot into the goal after a redirection off Stevens just 1:56 later.

Wellesley junior Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) made eight saves on 13 shots in the setback (4-4), Bowdoin junior Maddie Ferrucci (Essex, Conn.) turned back one Blue attempt to pick-up the win (4-1). Bowdoin finished the contest with the advantage in shots, 18-1, and penalty corner chances, 7-2. 

Wellesley returns to New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, September 28, when the Blue host Smith at 12:00 PM. Bowdoin will travel to Trinity (Conn.) on Saturday for an 11:00 AM start.
