Blue Field Hockey Rallies to Top Mount Holyoke in OT, 4-3

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College field hockey scored four unanswered goals, capped by junior Carson Dennis' (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) game-winner 5:31 into overtime, to rally from a three-goal deficit and defeat Mount Holyoke College, 4-3, in New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Senior Day Saturday at Butler Stadium.

Dennis scored her first career hat trick to lead the Blue to victory. Saturday's game was the 12th consecutive contest decided by one-goal between Wellesley (7-5 overall, 3-2 NEWMAC) and Mount Holyoke (5-8 overall, 1-4 NEWMAC) dating back to 2012. Of those 12 games, eight have gone to overtime.

Junior Mirei Golding-Powers (San Francisco, Calif.) scored twice in the opening 15 minutes to give the Lyons an early edge. Golding-Powers redirected a shot from sophomore Margaret Robb (Summit, N.J.) into the Blue cage 4:02 into the contest before scoring an unassisted marker that made the score 2-0 at 9:46. Robb added a goal of her own with 4:25 left before halftime, finishing on a penalty corner goal assisted by sophomore Laurissa Montigny (Enfield, Conn.) to give Mount Holyoke a 3-0 edge after 30 minutes.

Dennis got the Blue on the board 1:37 into the second half, capitalizing on a penalty stroke to score her sixth of the season. Wellesley continued to trail late in the fourth quarter before Dennis cut the lead in half with her second of the game, driving home a shot on a penalty corner insert from sophomore Maddie Bettencourt (Virginia Beach, Va.) at 57:38.

With Wellesley trailing 3-2 in the final minute, senior Hannah Maisano (Gambrills, Md.) took possession of the ball in the Mount Holyoke end and sent a cross into the circle that found Bettencourt. Bettencourt tapped the centering pass in for her fifth of the season to complete the comeback and tie the contest, 3-3, and send the game into overtime.

Bettencourt's goal in the final minute set the scene for Dennis, as the two connected for the second time on a penalty corner. Bettencourt opened the play with the insertion to Dennis who pulled back and slammed a shot past Mount Holyoke senior goalkeeper Morgan Turner (Chester, N.J.) for the game-winner.

Turner finished the game with nine saves on 13 Wellesley shots on target in the loss (5-8). Wellesley junior goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, PA.) made three stops on six shots to earn the win (7-5). Wellesley had a 25-8 advantage in shots in the game and a 20-4 edge after the first quarter.

Wellesley will host nationally-ranked Tufts in non-conference action on Wednesday, October 16, at 5:00 PM. Mount Holyoke will travel to Regis (Mass.) in non-conference play on Thursday, October 17, at 7:00 PM.
