Wellesley Field Hockey Falls to No. 6 Tufts, 2-0

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Senior Rachel Hamilton (Newton, Mass.) and sophomore Gillian Roeca (Baltimore, Md.) each scored to lead No. 6 Tufts University to a 2-0 non-conference victory over Wellesley College field hockey on Wednesday evening at Butler Stadium.

Tufts has now won four straight to improve to 10-2 overall. The Blue drop to 7-6 on the season and 5-5 at Butler Stadium.

Tufts controlled play throughout the opening half, outshooting the Blue 10-0, but only took a 1-0 lead to the break. The Jumbos put four shots on target as Wellesley goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) made two stops and senior Clare Doyle (Louisville, Ky.) cleared a hard drive from first year Reegan McCluske (Los Gatos, Calif.) off the line for a defensive save 5:34 into the second period.

The Jumbos broke through 7:06 into the second period when Hamilton powered home a feed from McClusky at the top of the circle on a penalty corner set-up. The goal was Hamilton's fourth of the season.

The visitors added to the lead 5:17 into the second half, scoring on a penalty corner when Roeca redirected a drive from junior Beth Krikorian (Windham, N.H.) into the Blue cage. Roeca now has five goals on the season.

Tufts finished the game with a 21-1 advantage in shots, as Blue junior Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) had the only Wellesley attempt at goal in the second half. Sullivan (7-5) finished the contest with five saves, while sophomores Andie Stallman (Barrington, R.I.) and Emma Smith (Lakeville, Conn.) split time in the Tufts cage.

Wellesley returns to New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) play on Saturday, October 19, at 1:00 PM at Springfield. Tufts will play Conn. College on Saturday at 12:00 PM.
