Rappaport Scores Twice to Lead Wellesley Field Hockey Past Simmons, 3-1

BOSTON, Mass. -- Sophomore Julia Rappaport (Bala Cynwyd, Pa.) scored a pair of goals to lead Wellesley College field hockey to a 3-1 non-conference victory over Simmons College on Saturday morning at Daly Field.
Rappaport's second multi-goal game of the season helped the Blue improve to 8-8 overall. Simmons, who got a second period goal from senior Olivia Trull (Lowell, Mass.), is now 7-10 overall.
Wellesley scored twice in the opening 4:15 to take control of the game early. Rappaport got the Blue on the board 1:40 into the first period when she finished in front of the Simmons cage on the first shot of the game. Wellesley took a 2-0 lead on the team's second shot when first year Amy Kate Williams (Greenville, S.C.) fired a sweeping backhand past Simmons goalkeeper Lucy McNamara (Brewster, Mass.).
Simmons cut the Blue advantage to one in the second period. Trull netted her tenth of the season 2:34 into the frame to make the score 2-1. Junior Liz Poteat (Westfield, Mass.) played the ball to Trull off a rebound, as the Sharks capitalized on a rebound following the initial attempt on a penalty corner. Wellesley continued to lead, 2-1, at the half.
The Blue outshot the Sharks 7-0 in the third period but McNamara made seven saves to keep Simmons in the game. Wellesley continued to control play in the fourth, outshooting the Simmons, 7-2. Rappaport finally broke through to seal the game, scoring her second of the game and sixth of the season, when she redirected a cross from junior Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) past McNamara with 4:34 left in the contest to make the score 3-1.
Wellesley finished with a 22-7 advantage in shots and a 9-3 edge in penalty corners. McNamara took the loss (7-10) despite making 15 saves in the Simmons cage. Blue junior goalkeeper Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) turned back four shots in the win (8-8).
Wellesley returns home to host UMass-Dartmouth in non-conference play on Wednesday, October 30, at 4:00 PM. Simmons will travel to Lasell on Wednesday at 3:30 PM.
