Field Hockey Falls to Springfield in NEWMAC Quarterfinals, 2-1

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. -- Sophomore Kyra Ashe (Longmeadow, Mass.) scored a pair of goals to lead fourth-seeded Springfield College to a 2-1 victory over fifth-seeded Wellesley College in the quarterfinals of the 2019 New England Women's & Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) Field Hockey Championship at Stagg Field.

Springfield (11-7 overall) advances to face top-seeded Babson (17-3) in the NEWMAC semifinals at 3:00 PM on Thursday, November 7, in Babson Park.

Following a scoreless first quarter, Springfield took a 1-0 lead 8:46 into the second quarter when Ashe finished on a set-up from classmate Gabby Inkel (South Windsor, Conn.). The Pride carried the lead into the half before Ashe doubled the Springfield lead with her second of the game, and fourth of the season, 4:29 after the break.

The Blue cut the deficit to one late in the third quarter when junior Carson Dennis (Grosse Pointe Farms, Mich.) scored her 15th goal of the year with 5:42 left before the fourth quarter. Junior Mitzi Wiggin (North Hampton, N.H.) picked-up her fourth assist of the season on the play.

Wellesley earned the only penalty corner chance of the fourth quarter but Springfield junior Elizabeth Morehouse (North Attleboro, Mass.) denied Campbell on a bid at goal midway through the frame. Morehouse denied Wellesley's last chance at goal with 3:33 left in regulation to help the Pride hang on for the win, 2-1.

Morehouse finished the game with eight saves. Wellesley junior Janelle Sullivan (Philadelphia, Pa.) made six stops in the setback. Both teams finished with 12 shots and six penalty corners.

Wellesley finishes the season, the first under Head Coach Callie Lekas, with a 10-9 overall record.
