Early Goals Sink Wellesley Field Hockey Against WPI, 4-0

WORCESTER, Mass. - First year Abby Powers (Halifax, Mass.) scored a pair of goals for WPI to lead the Engineers to a 4-0 win over Wellesley College field hockey on Saturday at H.Carr Field at Alumni Stadium.

Powers had her second career multi-goal game for the Engineers (5-5 Overall, 3-0 NEWMAC) while juniors Lauren Meinhold (Boxboro, Mass.) and Abigail Rauch (Jackson, N.J.) also scored. Junior Kyra Deehr-Lewis (Newtown, Pa.) had eight saves for the Blue (4-6 Overall, 2-1 NEWMAC) and first year Ceci Miller (Lewiston, Maine) put a pair of shots on goal for Wellesley.

The Engineers got on the board early when Powers had a breakaway and flicked a shot over Wellesley's diving goalie. Only a minute later a penalty corner led to Meinhold expanding the Engineers' lead to 2-0. Sophomore Eliza Dutson (Woodstock, Conn.) assisted on the play. Powers brought the Engineers' lead to three late in the first quarter on a shot assisted by junior Emily Sollecito (Bedford, Mass.).

Neither team would score in the second or third quarters with Deehr-Lewis of Wellesley and senior Nina Acquista (Longmeadow, Mass.) of WPI each making multiple saves.

With five minutes remaining in the game, Rauch scored her second goal of the season for WPI to make the score 4-0. First year Arie Lang (West Hartford, Conn.) picked up the assist on the play.

The Blue look to regroup Wednesday with a non-conference matchup at Nichols at 7:00 PM. The Engineers host a NEWMAC duel with Babson on Tuesday at 4:30 PM.
