CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team stretched their season record to 5-1 with wins over two NESCAC opponents at the National Training Center in Clermont, FL. The Blue picked up a 6-1 win over Colby in the opener and then posted a 4-2 victory over Bowdoin in the nightcap.
Against Colby, first-year Lindsay Johnson was the star. The rookie picked up her first collegiate win, throwing a complete game one-hitter. Johnson allowed one run with two walks while striking out 10 batters.
At the plate, Sinta Cebrian and Kimberly Cabral each picked up two hits. Cebrian was 2-3 with a run and an RBI, while Cabral went 2-3 with a double, a run scored an an RBI. Also for the Blue, Jayne Ellis blasted a triple and Mara Blesoff doubled.
The Wellesley-Bowdoin game was close the whole way. The Blue got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Megan Townsend singled, stole second and was knocked in by Samantha Spiga's double to deep left.
Bowdoin would tie the game at 1-1 in the top of the second after a leadoff infield single came around to score.
The Blue once again took the lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. With two outs, Blesoff started a rally with a hard-hit single through the right side. Cebrian then drove her in with a deep double to left field.
Again, Bowdoin fought back, tying the game at 2-2 in the fifth inning. A leadoff double was driven in with a single up the middle. However, starting pitcher Lauren Goldfarb got a big strikeout and a groundout to end the Polar Bear threat.
Wellesley pulled ahead for good in the bottom half of the inning. Jennifer Migliore led things off with a single and was advanced to second by a basehit from Goldfarb. A double-steal put runners on second and third, and an errant throw on the play allowed Migliore to score the go-ahead run. Goldfarb was later driven in on an RBI groundout from Townsend that set the score to 4-2 in favor of the Blue.
In the bottom half of the inning, Goldfarb got a Bowdoin strikeout and groundout before Blesoff ended the game with a diving stop while throwing out a speedy Polar Bear runner from her knees.
Wellesley has a much needed day off tomorrow, before returning for four more games on the Florida trip.
