Softball Earns Split; Falls to #4 Luther, Defeats Wash. & Jeff.

CLERMONT, Fla. -- The Wellesley College softball team recorded a split on Wednesday at the National Training Center in Clermont, Fl. The Blue dropped their opener, 4-0 against #4 Luther College, but rebounded in the second game, defeating Washington & Jefferson, 10-6.

In the opener, Lauren Goldfarb took the hard luck loss, throwing six strong innings, allowing three earned runs, five hits while striking out seven and walking two. Wellesley was victimized by five errors, while squandering leadoff doubles on two occasions.

At the plate, Goldfarb and Kimberly Cabral each recorded doubles, while Mara Blesoff added the only other hit for Wellesley.

In game two, the Blue rebounded with a 12-hit performance to outslug Washington & Jefferson, 10-6. Goldfarb was the offensive star, going 4-4 with three doubles and two RBI. Jayne Ellis drove in four runs on a 3-5 day, while Megan Townsend went 3-4 with three RBI.

In the circle, Goldfarb picked up the win, coming on in relief and throwing 2 and 1/3 innings, allowing three hits, no runs and one walk, while adding two strikeouts. Lindsay Johnson got the save, throwing four solid innings, allowing one earned run, on four hits while striking out three.

The Blue close out their Florida trip with the final doubleheader tomorrow. Wellesley takes on the University of Chicago at 1:30pm and then closes with Plymouth State at 3:30pm.
