WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College pitchers Lauren Goldfarb and Sarah Schwartzmeyer combined to surrender just three hits as the Blue softball team swept a doubleheader against New England Women's And Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) rival, MIT on Thursday afternoon. Goldfarb pitched a two-hit shutout in game one, as Wellesley won 8-0 in six innings, while Schwartzmeyer allowed just one hit in a 9-0, five inning victory in game two.
The wins improve Wellesley to 8-3 in the NEWMAC, 20-9 overall. The Blue have now won 20 games or more in each of their seven seasons as a varsity program. MIT drops to 3-9 in the NEWMAC, 4-17 overall.
Wellesley struck for 17 hits in game one, as each starter tacked on a hit. Goldfarb aided her cause with a 3-4 performance at the plate, while getting the six-inning victory in the circle. She walked three and struck out six to pick up her eighth win of the season.
Also for the Blue, Sara Del Balzo and Samantha Spiga each went 3-4, with Spiga recording a walk-off double. Mara Blesoff went 2-3, Rachel Harris and Lindsay Johnson each picked up two RBI, and Megan Townsend went 2-2 with two runs scored.
MIT's Katie Harrington and Michelle Dion each picked up hits for the Engineers in game one.
In game two, the Blue struck for seven unearned runs in the bottom of the second and then a walk-off home run off the bat of Blesoff ended the game, 9-0 in the fifth inning. Schwartzmeyer tossed five shut-out innings, allowing just one hit with three walks and six strikeouts.
At the plate, Goldfarb and Sinta Cebrian each doubled with two RBI, while Townsend also added an RBI.
MIT's lone hit in game two came from Dion.
Wellesley continues NEWMAC play with a Friday doubleheader at conference-leading Coast Guard. MIT also plays a conference doubleheader on Friday, traveling to Clark at 3:00pm.
