#4 Coast Guard Trips Up Blue Softball

NEW LONDON, CONN. -- Coast Guard All-American Hayley Feindel ran her scoreless innings streak to a career-best 57 straight as she fired a pair of shutouts and struck out 25 as Coast Guard, ranked fourth nationally, handed Wellesley its first sweep of the season.

With the wins, Coast Guard clinched at least a share of its third consecutive New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) regular season championship and secured the top-seed and will host next week's NEWMAC tournament for the third straight season.

The Bears improve to 29-1 overall and 13-1 in conference play and extend their winning streak to 12 straight. Wellesley's season record now sits at 20-11 overall, 8-5 in the NEWMAC. The Blue have already clinched a spot in the NEWMAC tournament.

Feindel leads the nation in wins (28), shutouts (20) and 327 strikeouts. She is sixth all-time in Division III with 1,076 career strikeouts.

In the opener, Feindel allowed three singles and struck out 13 and did not walk a batter to register her 19th shutout of the season.

Sophomore Lauren Goldfarb (8-6) went the distance for Wellesley. She only allowed three singles as well, but allowed a pair of earned runs while walking four and striking out five.

Coast Guard took a 1-0 lead in the second without a hit as sophomores Holli Bastinck and Catherine Walker were both hit by a pitch to open the inning and following a sac bunt by classmate Megan Cook, Bastinck scored on a passed ball.

The Bears got their first hit of the game in the fourth, an RBI single by freshman Kaitlin Ward and Ward struck again in the sixth, another RBI single scoring Walker who led off the frame with an infield single

In the night cap, Feindel fired a one-hitter, allowing just a single to senior Megan Townsend in the third inning. She walked one and fanned 12 to pickup the win.

For Wellesley, sophomore hurler Sarah Schwartzmeyer allowed just six hits, while walking five and striking out six.

Coast Guard got the only run it would need in the first as Bastinck's RBI single scored freshman Devin Fellman, who led off with walk.

The Bears added two in the second on a two-run double by Fellman. Senior Amanda Frederick had two hits including a double for the Bears in the game two win.
