Blue Softball Sweeps RIC

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College softball team swept a nonconference doubleheader against Rhode Island College on Wednesday afternoon in Wellesley. The Blue took game one against the Anchorwomen by a score of 6-1, while RIC fell in game two with a 10-0 final in five innings. With the sweep, Wellesley improved to a 20-9 overall record, while RIC's record fell to 9-19 overall. 

In game one, Wellesley senior pitcher
Lindsay Johnson improved to 11-6 as she pitched a complete game three-hitter, striking out ten batters with no walks.

The Blue struck first against RIC pitcher
Michelle Sylvestre as first-year Ashtyn Coleman launched a two-run homerun to straightaway centerfield in the bottom of the third inning.  RIC responded with a homerun by junior first baseman Justina Thoma in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom half of the fifth, Wellesley capitalized on a leadoff double by leftfielder
Anna Pisac, as Coleman doubled her in from second.  The Blue tacked on two more runs in the sixth inning as Emilyrose Havrilla (2015) and Mariah Philips (2015) collected RBI.

In game two, sophomore pitcher
Amber Braun earned the shutout victory as the Blue jumped on RIC first-year pitcher Lindsey Cabral with Wellesley leftfielder Maria LaBouyer's first homerun of the season.

Wellesley exploded for a nine-run fourth inning that featured a leadoff double by first baseman
Jayne Ellis, an additional hit by Ellis, and singles by four different Wellesley batters.  In total, eight different batters reached base in the inning.

With the double-header sweep Wellesley softball has earned their ninth twenty-win season in their ten-year history. 

The Blue are back in action on Friday with a NEWMAC doubleheader, as they host Springfield College, while RIC is set to host a makeup game against Western Connecticut State University on Thursday.
