Wellesley Eliminates Western Connecticut State in NCAA Softball Regionals

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- Wellesley College earned its first victory of the NCAA Tournament, defeating Western Connecticut State University, 2-0, in the fourth game of the 2014 NCAA Division III Softball Wellesley Regional. The Blue move to 28-10 on the season, and advance to face Saint Joseph's College at 5:00pm to determine who will face Bridgewater State in the championship tomorrow at 12:00. Western Connecticut closes out their season at 31-13-1.
Wellesley senior Lindsay Johnson threw a commanding four-hit complete game to move to 19-7 on the season. She shut out the Colonial lineup while striking out three and walking one. Johnson's 19 wins set a new single season record for Wellesley.
The Blue were very balanced offensively, with seven different players getting hits and six players drawing walks. Ashtyn Coleman drove in the go-ahead run in the sixth and Anna Pisac added some insurance with a solo home run in the seventh.
The Colonials were led by Nina Wojtkiewsicz, who went 1-for-3 with a walk, Biskup, Rodriguez, and Michaela Rocha also mustered hits. Emily Cintorino took the loss for Western Connecticut and moves to 13-4 on the season. In seven innings of work, she gave up seven hits and six walks while striking out one.
Both teams threatened in the second, with Wellesley getting Mariah Phillips on base in a fielder's choice and Jennifer Migliore drawing a walk in her first at bat, but a ground-out ended the Blue threat. Western Connecticut State had Erin Biskup in scoring position after she singled and then stole second, but a Western runner tried to advance to second after the throw went home and was gunned out at second to end the inning.
The Blue had another chance in the fourth inning, as Phillips reached on an error and Abby Casey doubled to center field to give Wellesley runners on second and third with two outs. Coleman was intentionally walked by Cintorino to load the bases for Wellesley, but a pop out to shortstop ended the inning.
Wellesley got on the board in the top of the sixth, as Phillips laced the first pitch of the inning back up the middle for a base hit and was moved over by Migliore sacrifice bunt. After Casey drew a walk, Coleman ripped her first pitch to center field for an RBI single, scoring Phillips and putting runners on second and third with one out. Cintorino intentionally walked Tsang to load the bases, but the Blue were unable to capitalize and went to the bottom of the sixth with a 1-0 lead. Johnson retired the side in order to close out the sixth.
