Softball Raises Over $1K in Support of American Foundation for Suicide Prevention

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- On Sunday, September 30 Wellesley College softball participated in the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP)’s Out of Darkness Walk, held at Natick High School. The AFSP holds Out of Darkness walks across the country to fight suicide and support their goal of reducing the suicide rate 20% by 2025.

 

The Blue joined the community of nearly 250k people walking in hundreds of cities across the country in support of AFSP's mission to save lives and bring hope to those affected by suicide. In preparation for the walk, the team raised $1,041, surpassing their shared fundraising goal of $1,000. The money raised will go towards the AFSP’s research, education programs, public policy advocacy, and support systems for survivors.

 

"[Wellesley Softball] wanted to participate in the walk as an effort to change the stigma around mental health and suicide," said senior captain Sydney Hopper. "Many players have been affected by suicides and suicide attempts of those close to them. By participating in the walk, the team hopes to support those that struggle with mental health or suicidal thoughts, and to raise awareness of resources that are available—for survivors, those who are struggling, and allies and supporters."
