Moniz Tosses No-Hitter as Wellesley Splits Two Games in Clermont

CLERMONT, Fla. – Senior Hayley Moniz (Westfield, Mass.) threw a no-hitter in an 11-0 win over Old Westbury in game one of the Wednesday doubleheader at the Legends Way Ballparks. The Blue followed up with a 9-0 loss (five innings) to Williams College.

Moniz dominated on the mound, dealing five no-hit innings and allowing just one baserunner and striking out seven. The senior also went 2-for-4 at the dish and scored a run. Junior Ingrid Hsu (San Ramon, Calif.) went 1-for-4 and drove in three runs. The Blue tallied a season high 13 hits in the win.

Sophomore Elli DeCleene (North Reading, Mass.) led off the game for Wellesley with a base knock to right field. She then reached third off a wild pitch and a stolen base. Hsu followed up with a single to left and gave the Blue an early 1-0 lead. Three more runs were scored in the inning, one off a wild pitch and a two-run double by first year Lauren Young (Fresno, Calif.) to extend the lead to 4-0 after one. 

The Blue would add six more in the second inning starting with senior Holly Chin (Newton, Mass.) scoring on an error. Hsu then bunted home a run and senior Marisa Hensch (Carlsbad, Calif. laced a triple to right center to add another. The eighth run of the contest came off a base hit up the middle by junior Marisa Sgambati (Scottsdale, Ariz.) to score Hensch. Junior Hannah Cain (McKinney, Texas) and Chin each recorded an RBI single to give the Blue a 10-0 after two innings.

Moniz continued her groove on the mound and allowed just one baserunner in the following two frames. Hsu added a third RBI in the top of the fifth after reaching on a fielder's choice to bring home Chin. Moniz then struck out the side in the bottom of the fifth to close out the 11-0 win.


Game 2 | Wellesley 0, Williams 9 | Final (Five innings)

Senior Maya Hartman (Media, Penn.) dealt five innings and just one hit for Williams in the win. First year Vicky Trujillo Balderas (Los Angeles, Calif.) went 1-for-2 and drove in three runs.

The Ephs jumped ahead in the second after Kelly McGuigan (San Mateo, Calif.) hit a two-run blast to straight away center field. Williams was able to tack on three more in the top of the third starting with Kayla Chang (Alameda, Calif.) scoring on a throwing error by Blue catcher Chloe Theriault (Peoria, Ariz.). Sophomore Ronni Ramos (Murphy, Texas) followed with an RBI double to left and Trujillo knocked home two more with a base hit. The Ephs put the game out of reach with three more runs scored in the fifth and a 9-0 lead. Young would record the first hit for the Blue with a double in the bottom of the fifth, but was halted there Cain lined out to third and Theriault flied out to deep left.

The Blue will wrap up the spring break games with games against Bowdoin at 10:15 AM and Union (N.Y.) at 12:15 PM at Hancock Park.
