Wellesley Softball Drops Doubleheader in Home Opener with UMass.-Boston

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College softball team dropped a pair of games to UMass.-Boston in the 2022 home opener on Wednesday afternoon.

Game 1 | UMass.-Boston 3, Wellesley 2 | Final

The Beacons were able to manufacture a run in the top of the first with Haley Tilberry (Moosic, Penn.) scoring on a wild pitch. The Blue were quick to respond after sophomore Chloe Theriault (Peoria, Ariz.) ripped a single up the middle to score Hayley Moniz (Westfield, Mass.) to tie the game in the second. In the top of the third, junior Sydney Sanden (Riverton, Conn.) brought home a run with an RBI single with two outs. Sanden then stole second and allowed Brianna Melchionda (Marshfield, Mass.) to steal home which gave the Beacons a 3-1 lead.

The Blue got one back in the bottom of the fourth after first year Lauren Young (Fresno, Calif.) drove home Marisa Hensch (Carlsbad, Calif.) with a single through the left side. Both teams finished with lights out pitching and the Beacons held on to take the first game of the doubleheader 3-2.

Melchiond dealt seven innings and allowed just four hits to pick up the win. Junior Marisa Sgambati (Scottsdale, Ariz.) also went the full game and allowed five hits and just one earned run in the close loss.

Game 2 | UMass.-Boston 10, Wellesley 2 | Final (5 innings)

UMass.-Boston came out blazing in the second game and scored nine runs in the opening frame. The Beacons batted around and Sanden recorded four RBI's in the inning. Junior Jordan Toomey (Arlington, Mass.) singled home a run in the second and the Beacons led 10-0. The Blue found some momentum in the fourth with two hits and Moniz brought home a run with a sacrifice fly to center field. Needing two runs in the bottom of the fifth, senior Holly Chin (Newton, Mass.) drove a double to left field and scored Hannah Cain (McKinney, Texas). However it was the only run the Blue would score in the frame and fell 10-2 after five.

Wellesley will play its first pair of New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) games on Saturday, April 2 at 12:00 and 2:00 PM at MIT. UMass.-Boston will remain on the road for a doubleheader with Rhode Island College on Saturday at 1:00 and 3:00 PM.
