Wellesley Softball Bested by Springfield in a Doubleheader on Sunday

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. – The Wellesley College softball team fell in two games to New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference (NEWMAC) opponent Springfield on Sunday.

Game 1 | Wellesley 1, Springfield 5 | Final

Springfield took a 1-0 lead in the third inning as Alli Olsen (Ridgewood, N.J.) knocked a double down the left field line to score Mackenzie Doyle (Gloucester, R.I.). The Blue drew the game to a 1-1 tie in the top of the fourth after stringing together three hits in the inning. Senior Hayley Moniz (Westfield, Mass.) roped a double to get it started for Wellesley, before junior Marisa Sgambati (Scottsdale, Ariz.) singled home Moniz and made it a 1-1 game. The Blue had the bases loaded with two outs after a walk, but the Pride stranded all three runners as Olsen scooped a grounder and flipped to Dana Serricchio (Stamford, Conn.) for the out to end the inning.

The Pride gained a separation in the bottom of the fifth with a bases loaded walk brought in Doyle, then up next was Kayla Stvan (Parlin, N.J.), who laid a double to the gap in left and cleared the bases to help Springfield improve its lead to 5-1. The Blue led off the sixth with a baserunner after Sgambati worked a walk. Springfield then turned a huge double play after Peytin Penny (Louisville, Kent.) lined out to third base and Hannah Cain (McKinney, Texas) was doubled up at first. The Blue then went down in order in the seventh as Springfield held on to win game one 5-1.

Game 2 | Wellesley 1, Springfield 3 | Final

Emily Gell (Trumbull, Conn.) went seven innings for Springfield and allowed three hits, one run, and collected four strikeouts in game two. The Blue got an impressive performance from Sgambati on the mound who dealt six innings and allowed just two earned runs.

The Blue took an early lead in the second inning as Moniz hit a lead off double to start the inning, before Sgambati helped herself and scored Moniz with a sacrifice fly. Springfield wasted no time tying the game as an error scored Serricchio in the bottom of the third to even the game at 1-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Doyle punched a hit deep to center for a triple early in the inning. Doyle was brought home the following at bat as Olsen laid down a bunt and beat out the throw to earn the RBI. Springfield loaded the bases as Callie Gendron (Berlin, Conn.) hit a single up the middle and Olsen scored on the next at bat to give Springfield the 3-1. Moniz collected one more hit in the seventh inning, but was left stranded as Springfield came away with the 3-1 win.

Next up, the Blue travel to Brandeis for a non-conference doubleheader starting at 3:00 PM on Wednesday, April 13. Springfield will entertain Amherst on Wednesday at 3:00 and 5:00 PM.
