Basketball Drops Season Opener at UNE

BIDDEFORD, Maine -- Wellesley College basketball dropped its season opener, 65-51, to host University of New England (UNE) in the opening round of the Ramada Roundball Invitational at the Harold Alfond Forum on Saturday evening.

Senior Morgyne Weaver tallied a game-high 16 points on 7-for-12 shooting while also collecting eight rebounds for the Blue. Junior Chelsi Scott also added nine points and collected a team-high nine rebounds. Sophomore Ailis Hanley also chipped in eight points and four rebounds off the bench.

Sadie DiPierro scored 15 points and added three steals to lead the Nor'easters. Alanna Vose came off the bench to score 12 points and grab five rebounds. Kelly Coleman contributed nine points, while Meghan Gribbin had seven points and five assists. Lauren Hayden was also credited with seven rebounds and four steals in the win.

UNE, the preseason favorite in the Commonwealth Coast Conference, never trailed throughout the contest and held a 30-16 lead at the break. The Nor'easters led by as many as 19 in the second half en route to the 65-51 victory.

Wellesley will take on Keene State College in the consolation game tomorrow at 4 p.m. UNE will play No. 3 Tufts in the Championship at 6:00 PM.
