Basketball Drops 60-43 Matchup with New England College

WELLESLEY, Mass. -- New England College senior Kayla Goldring (Hollywood, Md.) grabbed a game-high 25 rebounds and added 12 points to lead the Pilgrims to a 60-43 win over Wellesley on Tuesday night.

With the loss, Wellesley falls to 2-8 overall. New England improves to 7-4 as a team.

Goldring finished with four made field goals and 12 offensive rebounds. Also in double figures for the Pilgrims was sophomore Alissia Corona (Wylie, Texas) with 10 points and three steals. Off the bench, Mariah Thomas (Cypress, Texas) had a solid six points and eight rebounds.

Sophomore Anna Greenthal (Orinda, Calif.) totaled 12 points and had four steals. Junior Lily Forrester (Hamilton, Va.) scored a career-high seven points and brought down eight boards. Classmate Camille Taylor (Boston, Mass.) talled eight points on 3-of-4 shooting. Senior Valentina Morakis (Long Island, N.Y.) also finished with eight points.

The Blue got out ahead 3-2 in the first after a pair of free throws made by Taylor. The Pilgrims would answer with a three-pointer knocked down by Asia Jones (Boynton Beach, Fla.) at the 6:28 mark. The game would be tied 7-7 at the end of the first, after Gina Fiore (Reading, Pa.) converted on a layup. New England got out to a hot start in the second, using an 8-0 run to take a 16-7 lead. The Blue snapped the run by attacking the basket and Morakis making two free throws. Trailing by five with just two seconds to play, Morakis made a layup as time expired and New England led 21-18 going into the break.

Right out of halftime, Taylor scored for the Blue off a dish by Greenthal and the deficit was just one. New England then found an offensive spark, after a Corona layup at the 4:30 mark gave the team an 11 point lead. Wellesley was outscored 23-8 in the third period, with Goldring and Corona each scoring five points. The Blue scored the first three points of the fourth quarter, all coming from the charity stripe. A made layup by New England's Brianna Pierreval (Boynton Beach, Fla.) extended the lead back to 16 with 5:43 to play. The Blue couldn't find its offense and made just three field goals in the final period to fall 60-43.

New England grabbed a total of 25 offensive rebounds and scored 22 second chance points. The Pilgrims were also solid off the bench, collecting 24 bench points to just nine for Wellesley. The Blue forced 21 total turnovers and scored 16 points off them.

Wellesley will travel to Boston this Saturday, December 11 to face Wentworth at 1:00 PM. New England College returns home on Friday, December 10 for a meeting with Smith College at 6:30 PM.
