Wellesley Fencing Wins Five Matches at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- The Wellesley College fencing team picked up five victories, competing at the 2013 Vassar Invitational on Sunday, Yeshiva University, Hunter College, Queens College, Fairleigh Dickinson University (FDU), and West Point. The Blue also fenced against City College of New York (CCNY), Stevens Institute of Technology, and Haverford.

All three of Wellesley's weapon squads picked up at least 40 victories on the day. The Blue's foil squad went 47-25 to lead the team, while sabre went 41-31 and epee posted a 40-27 record. 

Against Yeshiva, Wellesley won 23-5, picking up 9-0 sweeps in both epee and foil, while taking sabre, 7-2. The Blue picked up matching 22-5 victories over both Hunter and Queens. Against Hunter, epee swept 9-0, while foil went 8-1 and sabre won 5-4. Battling Queens, foil swept 9-0, sabre went 8-1, while foil won, 5-4.

The Blue also came out on top of two close matches against West Point (17-10) and FDU (14-13). Against West Point, the Blue foil squad provided an 8-1 cushion, while epee won 5-4, and sabre fell 5-4. In the FDU match, a 7-2 win in epee carried Wellesley, as sabre fell 5-4, and foil lost, 6-3. 

Wellesley had a close bout against CCNY, dropping the final, 15-12. Foil picked up a 5-4 win, but epee fell 5-4, and sabre fell 6-3. The Blue dropped matches against Stevens and Haverford both by 18-9 scores, highlighted by a 6-3 sabre win against Haverford.

Individually, first-year Jessica Guo led all Wellesley fencers, compiling a fantastic 20-4 overall record in foil. Junior Kathryn Ledbetter was next on the Blue, going 18-6 in epee. Senior Dania Wright (sabre) and first-year Pamela Wang (foil) both ended the tournament with matching 17-7 marks.

Sophomore Charlotte Treadwell recorded 15 wins on the day in epee, while first-year Jasmine Davis racked up 13 wins in sabre. Rounding out the Wellesley fencers, first-year Alice Xu (sabre) tallied 11 wins, sophomore Camille Samulski (foil) picked up 10, and senior Courtney Collins (epee) added seven victories. 

Wellesley fencing is back in action on Saturday, traveling to the first Northeast Conference Meet, hosted by Brown University.
