Brandeis Nips Wellesley Fencing

WALTHAM, Mass. -- The Wellesley College fencing team was upended by Brandeis University on Wednesday evening on the road. The Judges topped the Blue 17-10, taking two of the three weapon bouts. 

The win improves Brandeis to 8-5 on the season, while the Blue fall to 6-9 overall.

The match was tight in the epee and foil competitions, each finishing with 5-4 scores. Wellesley battled back to win the tight epee match, while Brandeis nipped the Blue in foil. The sabre competition made the difference tonight for the Judges, as Brandeis cruised to an 8-1 win to take the match 17-10.

In epee, Wellesley faced an 4-1 deficit and won its final four bouts to take the weapon, 5-4. Junior Kathryn Ledbetter and sophomore Charlotte Treadwell each won twice for the Blue, while junior Olivia Wei also grabbed a win. Ledbetter's two wins came in the final four bouts, as the Blue snuck away with the victory.

In foil, it was Brandeis that came out on top, 5-4. First-years Jessica Guo and Pamela Wang each picked up two wins to lead Wellesley in the weapon. 

In the sabre competition, Wellesley's lone win came from the arm of first-year Jasmine Davis.

Wellesley fencing returns to action on Sunday at 9:00am, hosting the 2014 Wellesley Invitational. The Blue will welcome Tufts, Mount Holyoke and Boston University.
