Wellesley Fencing Tops BU and Mount Holyoke at Home Invitational

WELLESLEY, Mass. – The Wellesley College fencing team posted a 2-1 record, competing at the Blue's home invitational on Sunday. Wellesley grabbed wins over Mount Holyoke College and Boston University, but fell to Tufts University, who went 3-0 at the event. 

The Blue opened the day with a commanding 22-5 victory over Mount Holyoke. Wellesley swept all three weapons against the Lyons, coming up with a 9-0 sweep in foil, and winning 7-2 in epee, and 6-3 in sabre. 

In round two, Wellesley topped BU by a score of 17-10. The Blue grabbed wins in epee and foil, including a 9-0 epee sweep and a 7-2 in in foil. In sabre, BU edged out the Blue, 7-2.

Closing out the competition against Tufts, Wellesley fell 19-8. The Blue grabbed a thrilling 5-4 victory in the foil competition, winning the final three bouts to earn the come-from-behind win. In epee, Tufts edged Wellesley, 6-3, and in sabre, the Jumbos swept the Blue, 9-0. 

Wellesley's foil squad went undefeated on the day, combining to go 20-7 at the event. Epee picked up a pair of wins, earning a 19-8 record at the tournament. The sabre squad grabbed one team win, and accounted for eight individual victories on the day.

Individually, Wellesley junior
Kathryn Ledbetter (epee) and first-year Jessica Guo (foil) each recorded 8-1 records at the event. First-year Pamela Wang (foil) and sophomore Charlotte Treadwell (epee) added totals of seven and six wins respectively. Sophomore Camille Samulski (foil) each added five victories on the day, while senior Dania Wright led the sabre squad with four wins. Rounding out the individual records, junior Olivia Wei (epee) and first-year Alice Xu (sabre) recorded three victories each, while junior Diana Lee (epee) chipped in with two wins and first-year Jasmine Davis (sabre) also added a victory.  

The Wellesley fencing team is now 8-10 on the season. The Blue will be back in action on February 8th, heading to the University of New Hampshire for the second Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season.
