Blue Fencing Finishes Seventh at New England Championships

SOUTH HADLEY, Mass. -- The Wellesley College fencing team finished seventh overall at the 2014 New England Intercollegiate Fencing Championships on Saturday at Mount Holyoke College.

The Blue improved on their 10th place finish a year ago, facing 14 teams from across New England. Leading the way, Wellesley's foil squad recorded a sixth place finish, while the sabre squad ended its day in seventh place. The Blue epee squad also had a solid competition, ranking 11th overall.

Individually, the field was divided into three flights for each weapon, with one fencer competing in each of the flights, contributing to the overall team total in that weapon. Wellesley's day was highlighted by a pair of student-athletes who advanced out of the flights and finished in the top-12 overall.

Wellesley first-year Jessica Guo and senior Dania Wright paced the Blue individually. Guo advanced out of the "A" flight of the foil competition with eight victories and a sixth place ranking. She then grabbed two more wins to rank 10th overall in the competition. Wright, competing in sabre, notched seven victories in the "A" flight for a sixth place ranking. She finished the final round in 12th overall.

In foil, first-year Pamela Wang and sophomore Camille Samulski also fared well in the pool play round. Wang picked up eight victories and finished sixth in the "B" flight, while Samulskin won 10 times to rank 4th in the "C" flight.

In epee,  junior Kathryn Ledbetter, sophomore Charlotte Treadwell, and junior Diana Lee, all competed strong in the pool round. Ledbetter ranked eighth in the "A" flight, grabbing seven total victories. Treadwell was 11th in the "B" flight with four victories, while Lee was 12th in the "C" flight with three wins.

Wrapping up the competition, first-years Jasmine Davis and Alice Xu competed well in the sabre pools for the Blue. Davis competed in the "B" flight and ranked ninth with six victories, while Xu was fifth in the "C" pool, notching seven wins on the day.
