Brandeis Tops Wellesley Fencing, 15-12

WELLESLEY, Mass. — Wellesley College fencing rallied for a 5-4 victory in foil but ultimately fell three victories short of visiting Brandeis University, dropping a 15-12 decision in the annual dual meet between the two schools on Wednesday evening at the Keohane Sports Center. 

The Judges, who have now won eight in-a-row in the series, opened with a 6-3 victory in epee. Brandeis first year Liz Feller went 2-0 in bouts, while Gwendolyn Mowell, Rosa Zhang, Vanessa Fong and Savannah Bishop each recorded victories to give the Judges the 6-3 victory. 

Wellesley senior Kathryn Ledbetter led the way for the Blue in epee, going a perfect 3-0 in her bouts. Charlotte Treadwell and Vanessa Willoughby also competed for the Blue in epee.

Brandeis took a 5-2 advantage in sabre before the Blue rallied to take the final two bouts. Deborah Abiri, Nina Sayles and Jaclyn Hammond went a perfect 3-0 in the first round of bouts versus the Blue's Alice Xu, Madeline Barowsky and Jasmine Davis. However, Both Xu and Davis bounced backed in the second round, with Xu defeating Laura Broffman, 5-3, and Davis earning a 5-2 victory over Abiri. Hammond then hung on to win a tight 5-4 victory over Barowsky. 

Broffman secured the Brandeis victory in sabre with a 5-2 victory over Davis before Wellesley's Xu grabbed her second victory in-a-row and Barowsky notched her first to end the sabre competition with a 5-4 score.

The Blue earned the victory in foil, this time taking a 5-4 decision of their own. Both Camille Samulski and Pamela Wang went 2-1 in their bouts, while Taylor Hood also secured a victory in addition to dropping a pair of close 5-3 decisions. Hood's victory over the Judges' Anna Craven secured the 5-4 Wellesley victory in the final bout of the evening.

For the Judges, Emilia Dwuer went 2-0 in foil, while Zimeng Xue and Eva Ahmad also secured victories.

Wellesley will return to action on Sunday, hosting the annual Wellesley Invitational at the Keohane Sports Center beginning at 9:00 am. Brandies will be back in action at the second Northeast Conference Meet of the season on Saturday at Brown University.
