Blue Fencing Grabs Seventh Place at NEIFC New England Championships

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y. -- First year Taylor Hood led the way with a fourth place finish in foil as Wellesley College fencing took seventh place overall at the 2015 NEIFC New England Championships on Saturday at Vassar College. 

At Saturday's Championship, each weapon was divided into three pools (A, B and C) with one fencer from each of the fifteen participating schools in each pool. The top six fencers in the 'A' pool, top four in the 'B' pool and top two in the 'C' pool then advanced to the final rounds to decide the individual champion in each weapon.

The Blue's foil crew of Hood, Pamela Wang and Camille Samulski combined to go 27-14 and earn sixth place at the Championships, Wellesley's best team finish of the day. 

Hood finished the preliminary rounds of the Women's Foil 'A' Competition with a record of 10-4 and a +26 in touches scored, advancing to the final rounds in foil. In round one of the final, Hood went 3-2 in her pool advancing to round two where she also went 3-2 to place fourth overall.  

Wang went 9-5 to take seventh in the foil 'B' competition, while Samulski had a record of 8-5 to finish sixth in the 'C' competition. 

The Blue's sabre and epee teams both finished eighth in their respective categories, with the sabre team compiling 14 wins in 38 total bouts and the epee fencers going 23-17 overall. 

In saber, the Blue's Madeline Barowsky won a pair of bouts in the 'A' competition, while Jasmine Davis went 7-6 to take seventh in the 'B' competition and Alice Xu went 5-7 in the 'C' pool, finishing ninth.

In epee, Charlotte Treadwell went 7-6 to take eighth in the 'A' standings. Kathryn Ledbetter had a mark of 10-4 in the 'B' standings to earn sixth and Olivia Wei went 6-7 in the 'C' to earn eighth place. 

Blue fencing will now prepare for the 2015 NCAA Northeast Regional on March 8th at New York University.
