Wellesley Fencing Competes at 2015 NCAA Northeast Regional
NEW YORK, N.Y. -- Wellesley College fencing wrapped up competition at the 2015 NCAA Northeast Regional on Sunday at New York University.
The Blue sent eight fencers to this year's regional, as senior Kathryn Ledbetter and junior Charlotte Treadwell competed in epee, sophomores Jasmine Davis and Alice Xu and first year Madeleine Barowsky participated in sabre and junior Camille Samulski, sophomore Pamela Wang and first year Taylor Hood fought in foil.
Hood led the way for the Blue, finishing 19th overall in foil and fifth among competitors from Division III institutions. The talented first year went 3-1 in her first round pool before earning three more victories in round two, going 3-3 overall in her pool to advance to the third round. Despite earning a victory in her pool, Hood's day ended with a 19th place finish in round three.
Wang also advanced to the second round in foil, going 3-1 in her opening round pool before being eliminated after going 2-4 in her second round pool. Samulski was eliminated in the opening round after going winless in her pool.
In epee, Treadwell scored one bout victory but both she and Ledbetter failed to advance out of the opening round pools.
In sabre, Davis and Xu each earned a pair of victories in the opening round, as Xu advanced thanks to a plus-five differential in touches scored. Unfortunately, Davis was eliminated due to a touch differential of minus-five despite her two victories. Barowsky also failed to advance out of the first round pool. Xu would then bow out in the second round after recording a victory.
Wellesley fencing concludes the 2014-15 season with today's action. The Blue recorded 12 victories in team competitions this season, two more than their win total from the 2013-14 season.
