Blue Fencing Goes 6-1 at Vassar Invitational

POUGHKEEPSIE, N.Y.. – Wellesley College fencing opened the dual meet season on Sunday at the annual Vassar Invitational, earning six team victories on the day. Wellesley defeated CCNY, Yeshiva, Hunter, Queens, Fairleigh Dickinson and Haverford at the event, only suffering a setback to Stevens. 

Wellesley 17, CCNY 10

Wellesley opened with a 17-10 victory over CCNY, as an 8-1 win in sabre carried the team to victory. Jasmine Davis (Long Valley, N.J.) and first year Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) each went a perfect 3-0 in sabre bouts vs. CCNY. Wellesley dropped a 5-4 decision in foil, as sophomore Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) led the group with a 2-1 mark. The Blue then closed out the win with a 5-4 win in epee, as both first year Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) and Charlotte Treadwell (Burlington, Vt.) went 2-1 in their bouts. 

Wellesley 24, Yeshiva 3

The Blue cruised to 8-1 wins in all three weapons versus Yeshiva, taking a 24-3 win in their biggest victory of the day. Davis added three more wins, while Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) also went 3-0 in sabre. In foil, both Hood and first yearJennifer Chien (Chicago, Ill.) went 3-0, with Samulski adding a 2-0 record. Treadwell and Cassandra Cronin turned in 3-0 marks, while Emma Brewer-Wallin (Salem, Ore.) went 2-0 in epee.

Wellesley 21, Hunter 6 

Wellesley kept the ball rolling against Hunter, earning a third consecutive 8-1 win in sabre and a 21-6 win in the dual. Davis and Barowsky both went 3-0, while Harney turned in a 2-1 record. The Blue then grabbed a 6-3 win in foil as Hood, Samulski and Chien all earned two bout wins. A 7-2 epee win sealed the victory, as Treadwell went 3-0 and Brewer-Wallin and Cassandra Cronin each grabbed two more wins. 

Stevens 17, Wellesley 10

The Blue's only blemish on the day came in a 17-10 defeat to Stevens. Wellesley's only victory in the matchup came thanks to a 6-3 decision in epee, as Brewer-Wallin went a perfect 3-0 to lead the group. The Ducks sent the sabre crew to their first setback, taking a 9-0 sweep. Wellesley fought back in foil, before dropping a narrow 5-4 final that saw both Hood and Chien earn two wins. 

Wellesley 21, Queens 6

Following their first defeat of the year, the Blue bounced back with a solid 21-6 win over Queens, earning 7-2 wins in all three weapons. The sabre crew got back on track behind three wins apiece from Davis and Barowsky, while Hood and Chien also added perfect records in foil. In epee, the Blue shook-off a defeat in the first bout thanks to 3-0 marks from Cassandra Cronin and Brewer-Wallin.

Wellesley 17, FDU 10

An 8-1 win in epee helped the Blue capture a 17-10 win over FDU. Treadwell and Brewer-Walling again recorded 3-0 records, while Cassandra Cronin went 2-1 in bouts. The sabre crew did their part to seal the win with a 7-2 victory, as Davis again went a perfect 3-0 and Harney and Barowsky both went 2-1. FDU took the victory in foil, despite a 2-1 mark from Hood.

Wellesley 19, Haverford 8

The day ended with the Blue capturing a 19-8 victory over Haverford. This time it was the foil team's time to shine, as Hood, Chien and Samulski combined to go 8-1 in bouts versus the Fords. Wellesley then added a 6-3 win sabre and a 5-4 win in epee to win the dual, with Davis going a perfect 3-0 once again to finish the day with a team-best 18-3 record.

Wellesley fencing will return to action next Saturday, November 21, at the first Northeast Fencing Conference Meet at Brown University in Providence, R.I.
