Blue Fencing Earns Four Victories at Third Northeast Conference Meet

NORTHAMPTON, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing earned four victories on Saturday at the third Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season, hosted by Smith College. The Blue defeated Boston University, Dartmouth College, the host Pioneers and the University of Massachusetts, while also suffering setbacks to Vassar College and Tufts University. The Blue are now 11-10 overall.

Wellesley 20, Boston University 7 

The Blue opened the day with a 20-7 win over the Terriers, snapping a seven-bout losing streak dating back to the first NFC meet of the year on November 21. The foil and sabre fencers paced the Blue in the match-up, as each team put together 8-1 marks. In foil, sophomore Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) went 3-0 without surrendering a touch to lead the Blue.

Wellesley 17, Dartmouth 10

Wellesley continued their winning ways against the Big Green, with foil going 9-0 behind 3-0 records from Hood, senior Camille Samulski (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and first year Jennifer Chien (Chicago, Ill.). The Blue followed with a 5-4 win in epee, as senior Charlotte Treadwell (Burlington, Vt.) went 3-0 with a +11 touch ratio. The sabre crew sealed the win with a 6-3 victory. Both sophomore Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) and first year Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) went 2-1 in sabre.

Wellesley 17, Smith 10 

The Blue earned a third win with a 17-10 triumph over the host Pioneers, as an 8-1 win in epee made all the difference. Wellesley took foil by a narrow 5-4 margin, thanks to a 3-0 record from Chien. The Blue then earned a commanding 8-1 win in epee, as Treadwell and first year Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) both went 3-0. Smith countered with a 5-4 win sabre but the Blue's advantage in epee helped the squad secure the 17-10 win.

Vassar 17, Wellesley 10 

Vassar snapped the Blue's winning streak at three, handing Wellesley a 17-10 setback. The Brewers won all three weapons, taking a 5-4 edge in foil and epee and a 7-2 win in sabre. Cassandra Cronin went 3-0 in epee to pace the Blue, while Hood and Chien both went 2-1 in foil and Barowsky went 2-1 in sabre. 

Tufts 19, Wellesley 8

Wellesley was sent to a second defeat by the Jumbos. Tufts earned 7-2 wins in epee and sabre and took a 5-4 win in foil. Hood and Chien again went 2-1 in foil, while Treadwell earned both Wellesley wins in epee and Barowsky and Harney earned bout victories in sabre.

Wellesley 19, Massachusetts 8

Wellesley ended the afternoon with a 19-8 win over UMass to finish with a 4-2 record on the day. Wellesley swept all three weapons, taking an 8-1 foil victory, a 5-4 epee win and a 6-3 triumph in sabre. Four fencers finished with 3-0 marks in the match-up, as Hood and Chien accomplished the feat in foil, while Cassandra Cronin and Harney went 3-0 in epee and sabre, respectively.
