Wellesley Fencing Falls to Brandeis in Midweek Matchup

WELLESLEY, Mass. – A 7-2 win in foil and a 6-3 triumph in epee helped visiting Brandeis University to a 16-11 victory over Wellesley College fencing on Wednesday evening at the Keohane Sports Center.

Wellesley, who secured a 6-3 victory in sabre, falls to the Judges for the second time this season to move to 9-12 overall. Brandeis improves to an even 10-10 on the year. 

The Judges opened the annual midweek matchup between the two schools with a 7-2 victory in foil. Brandeis first year Jessica Gets (Morganville, N.J.) led the way with a 3-0 record, while sophomore Joanne Carminucci (Brewster, N.Y.) went 2-0 and senior Chaya Schapiro (Los Angeles, Calif.) finished with a 2-1 mark. For the Blue, junior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) and first year Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) each grabbed one bout victory.

Wellesley rallied in sabre, closing the overall gap to 10-8 in the team score with a 6-3 victory. Wellesley senior Jasmine Davis (Long Valley, N.J.), junior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) and first year Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) all went 2-1 to secure the win. Harney clinched the victory in her final bout with a win over junior Laura Broffman (East Norwich, N.Y.). Senior Nina Sayles (Mamaroneck, N.Y.) earned all three points for the Judges, finishing sabre with a perfect 3-0 mark.

Brandeis clinched the win in epee, taking a 6-3 victory. Wellesley's Emma Brewer-Wallin (Salem, Ore.) opened with back-to-back wins, as the teams dueled to a 3-3 tie through the opening six bouts.  Junior Savannah Bishop (Alexandria, Va.) clinched the victory for the Judges in her final bout, before Brandeis went on to sweep the last two bouts to take the 16-11 win. Brewer-Wallin went 2-1 for the Blue, while sophomore Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) earned a win. Brandeis was paced by a 3-0 mark from junior Liz Feller (Corlandt Manor, N.Y.) and 2-1 record from first year Dakota Levy (Marion Station, Pa.).

Wellesley returns to action on Saturday, January 28, at the Cornell Invitational. Brandeis will head to the second Northeast Fencing Conference Meet of the season on Saturday at Brown University.
