Blue Fencing Downs Lafayette, Carnegie Mellon at Cornell Invitational
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Wellesley College fencing rebounded from an opening round defeat to host Cornell University to earn victories over Lafayette University and Carnegie Mellon University on Saturday at the Cornell Invitational. Wellesley snapped a string of three-straight defeats with the back-to-back wins, improving to 11-13 in head-to-head competition this season.
Sophomore Cassandra Cronin (Johns Creek, Ga.) led the way for the Blue with an 8-1 record in epee. Senior Jasmine Davis (Long Valley, N.J.) went 7-2 in sabre, while junior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) and first year Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) also went 7-2, respectively, in foil. Junior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) and sophomore Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) each went 6-3 in sabre.
Cornell 19, Wellesley 8
The Blue opened the day with a 19-8 setback to the Big Red, dropping 6-3 finals in epee and foil and a 7-2 decision in sabre. Wellesley improved on a 22-5 defeat to Cornell earlier this season, as Cronin earned a pair of wins in epee and Maurer earned two bout victories in foil. Junior Emma Brewer-Wallin (Salem, Ore.) also grabbed a win in epee, while Hood earned the other Wellesley victory in foil. After dropping the first three bouts in sabre, wins by Barowsky and Davis helped the Blue narrow the gap to 3-2, but five straight Cornell victories closed out the 7-2 final.
Wellesley 25, Lafayette 2
Wellesley rebounded from the opening round loss with a second round win against a shorthanded Lafayette squad. The Blue earned six wins by default en route to a 9-0 win in sabre and also took 8-1 wins in foil and epee, winning three bouts by default in each of the other two weapons. Davis, Barowsky and Harney were all perfect in sabre. Cronin and Brewer-Wallin each went 2-1 in epee, while first year Calla Nelles-Sager (Brooklyn, N.Y.) also earned a win. In foil, Hood and Maurer went 3-0 and first year Sarah Guise (Silver Spring, Md.) was 2-1.
Wellesley 19, Carnegie Mellon 8
The day ended for the Blue with a hard-fought 19-8 victory over Carnegie Mellon, as the sabre squad paced Wellesley with an 8-1 mark. Davis and Harney posted perfect records, while Barowsky went 2-1 as Wellesley cruised to victory. The Blue took five of the first six bouts in epee to secure the win, eventually closing out a 6-3 final. Cronin capped her day with a 3-0 round, Brewer-Wallin added two more wins, and first year Malak Alsayyad (Cairo, Egypt) also added a win. In foil, it took a victory by Hood in the final bout to secure a 5-4 Wellesley victory. Hood went a perfect 3-0 in the round to lead the Blue, while Maurer added the other two Wellesley victories.
Wellesley will close out their Northeast Fencing Conference schedule in their next outing on Saturday, February 11, at 8:30 AM at Tufts University.
