Wellesley Fencing Goes 5-1 At Season Opening LIU Post Invitational

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. – Wellesley College fencing opened the 2017-18 season on Sunday at the LIU Post Invitational. The Blue registered five wins at the event, defeating Yeshiva, the host Pioneers, Fairleigh Dickinson, Wagner, and Hunter, while only registering one setback to Drew. 

The Blue were dominant in foil, dropping only five bouts all day as senior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) went 13-1, sophomore Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) went 12-2 and first year Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) posted a 13-1 mark in her collegiate debut. Also making her collegiate debut, first year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) was equally as impressive, going 13-2 to lead the epee squad. In sabre, first year Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) posted the top mark for the Blue in her first collegiate event, going 12-2 overall.

Wellesley 23, Yeshiva 4 

The Blue got the season going with a lopsided victory over Yeshiva. Wellesley posted a 9-0 sweep in foil and matching 7-2 victories in epee and sabre. Tsao was 3-0 in foil, while seniors Hannah Schmidt (Oshkosh, Wis.) and Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) posted a 3-0 marks in epee and sabre, respectively. 

Wellesley 22, LIU Post 5

Hood, Tsao, Calventus-Coveney, Barowsky, Park, and sophomore Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) all went 3-0 in their respective weapons to lift the Blue past the host Pioneers. Calventus-Coveney's 3-0 mark was key to the Blue's 5-4 victory in epee, as Wellesley stormed past LIU Post in both Foil (8-1) and Sabre (9-0). 

Wellesley 19, Fairleigh Dickinson 8 

Wellesley ran their win streak to three with a victory over FDU. Despite a 4-5 loss in epee, the Blue posted an 8-1 win in foil and a 7-2 win in sabre to take the match. Hood and Maurer were both 3-0 in foil and Park was 2-0 in two bouts in sabre. 

Wellesley 21, Wagner 6

Wellesley picked-up a fourth straight win with a 21-6 rout of Wagner, winning all three weapons, 7-2. First year Corinne Wilklow (Fairfield, Conn.) was 2-0 in epee to lead the Blue to the win, while Hood, Maurer, and Tsao again posted undefeated record in foil. Park was 3-0 to lead the sabre squad, with Barowsky and Harney both going 2-1.

Drew 16, Wellesley 11 

Drew sent the Blue to their first setback of the Invitational and the season with an 11-16 defeat. Wellesley was victorious in foil, winning 6-3, but dropped 3-6 and 2-7 decisions in epee and sabre to fall to the Rangers. 

Wellesley 21, Hunter 6  

The Blue got back on track in their final match, defeating Hunter 21-6 thanks to a 9-0 win in foil, a 7-2 win in epee and a 5-4 win in sabre.  Calventus-Coveney and Wilklow ended the day going 2-0 in epee, while Park was 2-0 in sabre and Harney added a 2-1 mark in sabre. 

Wellesley Fencing continues the season next Sunday, November 12, at the annual Vassar Invitational in Poughkeepsie, N.Y..
