Wellesley Fencing Defeats UNH, SHU, and Brandeis at First NFC Meet
Wellesley Fencing Season Statistics
PROVIDENCE, R.I. – Wellesley College fencing posted a 3-3 record at the first Northeast Fencing Conference meet of the season on Saturday at the Olney-Margolies Atheltic Center at Brown University. Wellesley earned victories over UNH, Sacred Heart, and Brandeis, while falling to Boston College, MIT, and Brown. Wellesley is now 13-6 overall.
Sophomore Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) had the top mark for the Blue in foil with a 12-5 record. First-year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) added a 12-6 record in epee and is now 39-8 in 47 bouts this season. In sabre, junior Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) compiled a 14-3 record, while first-year first year Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) was 13-5.
Boston College 19, Wellesley 8
The Blue dropped all three weapons in an opening match setback to Boston College. Wellesley was defeated, 6-3, in both foil and sabre and 2-7 in epee. Maurer had a pair of wins in foil, while Calventus-Coveney was 2-1 in epee in the setback.
Wellesley 23, UNH 4
Wellesley cruised past UNH in their second match, sweeping foil and winning 7-2 in both epee and sabre. Maurer, senior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.), and first-years Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) and Molly McLachlan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) combined for the 9-0 mark in foil. Calventus-Coveney was 3-0 in epee and Park was 3-0 in sabre.
MIT 16, Wellesley 11
The Blue dropped a narrow final to their rivals from Cambridge. Park and Harney each posted 3-0 records to lead the Blue to a 7-2 win in sabre, but MIT took 7-2 wins in foil and epee to win the match. Both Blue wins in epee belonged to Calventus-Coveney.
Wellesley 19, Sacred Heart 8
Wellesley rebounded with a win over Sacred Heart in their fourth match. The foil and sabre squads spurred the Blue to the win, with each going 9-0. Maurer, Hood and Tsao were all 3-0 in foil. Senior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.), Harney, and Park each posted 3-0 records in sabre.
Brown 17, Wellesley 10
6-3 setbacks in epee and sabre and a 5-4 defeat in foil sent the Blue to a 17-10 defeat to Brown in their fifth match. Calventus-Coveney was 2-1 in epee and Harney was 2-1 in sabre but no other member of the Blue earned more than one bout victory in the defeat.
Wellesley 15, Brandeis 14
The Blue closed out the day with a big victory over Brandeis, as an 8-1 win in sabre made the difference. Barowsky and Harney were 3-0 and Park was 2-1 in the win. Calventus-Coveney added two more wins in epee and Maurer had a pair of victories in foil.
Wellesley will clash with a pair of local rivals on Tuesday, December 5, at Harvard University. The Blue will face the Crimson and Tufts University at 6:00 PM.
