Wellesley Fencing Defeats Tufts, Falls To Harvard In Tuesday Evening Match-up

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – Wellesley College fencing split a pair of matches in a midweek fixture at Harvard University's Malkin Athletic Center. The Blue defeated Tufts, 17-10, but dropped an 18-9 decision to the host Crimson.

Harvard 18, Wellesley 9  

Wellesley earned a 6-3 win in sabre against the Crimson, splitting six bouts, 3-3, while winning three by default as the hosts only fielded two fencers in the match-up. Senior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.), sophomore Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.), and first year Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) all posted 1-1 records in the victory.

The Blue dropped a 6-3 decision in epee, despite three victories from first year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain). Harvard took control of the match in foil, sweeping all nine bouts to secure the 9-0 victory.

Wellesley 17, Tufts 10

Spurred by a 7-2 win in epee and a 6-3 victory in foil, the Blue defeated Tufts, 17-10, in their second match. The Jumbos took a narrow 5-4 win in sabre.

Calventus-Coveney earned two more wins to end the evening with a 5-0 record in epee and improve to 44-8 on the season. Senior Hannah Schmidt (Oshkosh, Wis.) and first year Corinne Wilklow (Fairfield, Conn.) each added 2-1 records in epee, while first year Sarina Sun (Wallingford, Conn.) also picked-up a win. Senior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) and first years Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) and Molly McLachlan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) all posted 2-1 records in the 6-3 foil victory.

Harney and Park each added 2-1 marks in sabre, but the Jumbos sealed the victory with one bout remaining, taking a 5-3 lead before Park added the final Blue victory in the final bout.

The Blue will enjoy the semester break before returning to action Saturday, January 20, at the UC San Diego Women's Duals in San Diego, Calif.
