Calventus-Coveney Posts 3-0 Mark as Wellesley Fencing Falls to Brandeis

WALTHAM, Mass. -- First year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) posted a 3-0 mark in epee, but the Wellesley College fencing team was defeated in all three weapons to drop an 18-9 final to host Brandeis University on Tuesday evening at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center.

Wellesley moves to 14-9 overall after falling to Brandeis in the annual midweek match-up between the two sides. The Blue fell 7-2 in foil, 6-3 in epee, and 5-4 in sabre.

Calventus-Coveney secured all three Wellesley points in epee, winning a pair of bouts by a score of 5-3 and another by a 5-2 margin. Classmate Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) got the Blue on the board in foil following two defeats to start the first round, but only sophomore Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) was able to grab a point in the remaining bouts, as the Blue fell 7-2. Both Tsao and Maurer finished 1-2.

In sabre, first year Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) opened with a first round victory. Following a Brandeis win, senior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) put the Blue up 2-1 with her first win. The Judges countered with three straight wins to move within a win of clinching the weapon with three bouts remaining. However, Barowsky and Park each won their final bouts to tie the weapon, 4-4. In the end, Brandeis would get the win, 5-4, securing the final point in the final bout. Both Barowsky and Park finished sabre with 2-1 records.

Wellesley is back in action at the third Northeast Fencing Conference Meet of the season on Saturday, February 10, at Smith College.
