Maurer's 12th Place Finish in Foil Leads Wellesley Fencing at NCAA Regional

Sophomore Brie Maurer was 12th overall in foil in her second NCAA Regional appearance.

WALTHAM, Mass. – Paced by a 12th place performance in foil from sophomore Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.), Wellesley College fencing closed out the 2017-18 season with a strong showing on Sunday at the 2018 NCAA Northeast Regional. This year's regional was hosted by Brandeis University at the Gosman Sports and Convocation Center.

Maurer finished just six places shy of matching Hannah Braaten's ('11) program best regional performance in foil while making her run to the final pool. Sunday's regional consisted of four rounds of elimination pools in each weapon. After going 4-0 with a +19 touch ratio in the opening round, Maurer turned in a 3-3 (+2) record in Round #2 to advance to Round #3. Maurer then went 3-3 with an even touch ratio to grab the 12th and final spot in Round #4. Maurer's day ended with a 1-10 record in the grueling 11-bout final round pool, earning the sophomore 12th place and 2nd among fencers from Division III schools.

Also competing in foil, first year Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) took 33rd and senior Taylor Hood (Lexington, Ky.) finished in 37th place. Tsao was 3-1 (+7) in the opening round before going 1-5 (-20) to end the day in Round #2. Hood failed to advance out of the opening round, going 2-2 (-1) in her pool.

First year Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) was the top Wellesley finisher in sabre, taking 17th overall and 4th among competitors from Division III institutions. Park's day came to an end with a 1-5 (-11) record in Round #3, but not before she went 4-0 (+11) in Round #1 and 3-3 (even) in Round #2 to finish inside the top-20.

Making her third regional appearance, junior Meg Harney (Wilmette, Ill.) added a 28th place finish in sabre, while senior Madeleine Barowsky (Framingham, Mass.) was 42nd in her fourth and final regional appearance. Harney finished 3-7 (-10) overall, while Barowsky finished the day 1-3 (-8).

First year Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) concluded an outstanding rookie season with an 18th place finish in epee. Calventus-Coveney was an undefeated 4-0 (+13) in Round #1. She then finished 4-2 (+1) in Round #2 to earn a spot in the final 21. Her season then came to an end in Round #3 after posting a 2-4 (-11) mark. Calventus-Coveney was the top epee fencer for the Blue as classmate Corinne Wilklow (Fairfield, Conn.) finished 45th and senior Hannah Schmidt (Oshkosh, Wis.) took 47th. Both Wilklow and Schmidt were winless in the opening round.

Wellesley College fencing finished the 2017-18 season with 20 wins in team competitions, the most wins for the Blue since the 2010-11 season. Wellesley added a 3rd place finish at the annual NEIFC Championships before advancing nine fencers to this year's NCAA regional, the most for the program since the 2013-14 season.
