Wellesley Fencing Goes Undefeated at Season Opening LIU Post Invitational

BROOKVILLE, N.Y. -- Wellesley College fencing posted a perfect 7-0 record on Sunday at the season opening LIU Post Invitational. The Blue earned 155 bout victories, more than any other school at the event, while defeating Wagner, Yeshiva, NJIT, Hunter, FDU, Drew, and LIU Post. 

The Blue dominated the event, scoring more than 20 bout victories in six of their seven victories. Sophomore Julia Calventus-Coveney (Barcelona, Spain) led the Blue with 14 victories in epee, while classmate Lauren Park (Wayne, N.J.) finished 12-1 to lead the sabre squad. Junior Brie Maurer (Fredericksburg, Va.) and sophomore Molly McLachlan (Chapel Hill, N.C.) led Wellesley with records of 16-2 and 16-3, respectively, in foil. 

Wellesley 20, Wagner 7

The Blue opened the season with a 20-7 victory over Wagner, behind 7-2 wins in foil and epee and a 6-3 victory in sabre. Maurer and Calventus-Coveney each went 3-0 in the round, while Lucille Tsao (Succasunna, N.J.) 2-0 in foil and Gaby Inchoco (Fairfield, Conn.) was 2-0 in sabre. 

Wellesley 25, Yeshiva 2

Wellesley continued to roll in a second round match-up versus Yeshiva, winning the round 25-2. Wellesley was 8-1 in epee and sabre behind 3-0 rounds from Hanamei Shao (Vandenberg AFB, Calif.), Tsao, and McLachlan.

Wellesley 20, NJIT 7

An 8-1 victory in sabre helped carry the Blue to a 20-7 victory over NJIT. Wellesley earned 6-3 wins in both foil and epee, as McLachlan and Panya Tang (Toronto, Ontario, Canada) each went 2-0 in the victory.

Wellesley 26, Hunter 1 

The Blue dominated Hunter in their biggest win of the day. The Blue won sabre by default before posting wins of 8-1 in epee and 9-0 in foil. Maurer and Tsao were both 3-0 in foil, while Sam Wolstenholme-Britt (Cary, N.C.) finished 3-0 in epee.

Wellesley 23, FDU 4

Maurer posted her second straight 3-0 round to lead the Blue to a 23-4 win over FDU. Wellesley was 9-0 in sabre in the win, earning three wins by default while Inchoco, Park and Yasemin Ersen (Newton, Mass.) all finished 2-0.

Wellesley 16, Drew 11

The team's toughest test of the day ended with a 16-11 victory over Drew, as the Blue earned their first win over the Rangers in three seasons. Wellesley dropped a 4-5 final in foil, but 6-3 wins in epee and sabre clinched the win, as Calventus-Coveney, Ersen, and Park all went 3-0. 

Wellesley 25, LIU Post 2

Wellesley used a 25-2 win over host LIU Post to clinch a perfect 7-0 record at the invitational. Maurer, McLachlan, Tsao and Calventus-Coveney all finished the day with 3-0 marks for the Blue.

Wellesley continues the season next Sunday, November 11, at the Vassar Invitational. First round bouts begin at 10:00 AM.
